BRITISH engineers have unveiled a
three-wheeled car that,
at a metre wide, is designed to squeeze into the tiniest of parking spaces.
Funded by the European Union and backed by BMW, it is trumpeted as more environmentally friendly than the average vehicle because it runs on compressed natural gas. The car, called Clever (for compact low emission vehicle for urban transport, and a possible swipe at the Smart car brand) was launched at Bath University in south-west England, one of the centres behind the three-year project. Its developers hope to see it on European streets within five years at a cost of as little as £5000 ($A12,000). Exhibited in the university's car park this week, Clever's most striking feature is the way the chassis tilts, like a motorcycle, when the vehicle rounds a corner. The tilt system, designed by the engineers at Bath, is controlled electronically to make sure the car is balanced at all speeds.
One of the engineers, Ben Drew, said: "The main problem was finding a way of making sure such a narrow car did not overturn as it went round corners. The tilt system does that. It also makes it really fun to drive." The designers say the car combines the convenience and fun of a motorbike with the safety and comfort of a car. The body is enclosed in an aluminium frame and plastic coating. BMW is considering making the Clever vehicle if, as is expected, the EU insists that car makers produce a quota of green cars to counter the effect of gas guzzlers. The vehicle emits about a third as much carbon dioxide as conventional family cars, with fuel consumption equivalent to 2.17 litres per 100 kilometres. It has a top speed of 100 km/h and takes seven seconds to get from zero to 65 km/h. It can carry one passenger in a seat behind the driver. |

Kneeslider Hydrogen Motorcycle

Of course, this will improve as the technology is advanced. MotorCycle Powered Cars
Z Cars makes the motorcycle powered mini, one of the most "gotta have" cars around as well as the Tiger. Several configurations are available, both single and twin engined R1 power, Hayabusa and turbo Hayabusa in the Mini and all sorts of Tiger variants.
And just for good measure, their web site says they're working on a conversion for a Smart car. Remember those? Stock power output is 60hp. News Flash!! This just in... The Smartuki has now been built. It's a GSX-R1000 powered Smart Car with 180hp, 0-60 in 4.2 sec. and 12.4 quarter miles.

Beijing Permits Use of Electric Bicycles on City Streets
Chinese news service Xinhua reported last week that the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau has rescinded the city’s ban on operating battery-powered electric bicycles on city streets, effective January 4. The news service said the city banned the bikes from public roads in 2002, citing concerns that their batteries were difficult to dispose of and posed a potential environmental hazard. According to Xinhua, electric bicycles that meet national standards and have been approved by the Chinese government may operate on city streets after they are registered with the Beijing Traffic Administration. Xinhua noted that the city decided to lift the electric bicycle ban due to increasing traffic congestion and air pollution, as well as limited fossil fuel supplies. |

 150 Target stores will get Segway patrols
What's good for the police is apparently good for Target Security Patrols as well. Whenever we hear about police departments moving some officers to the two-wheeled, battery-powered Segway PTs (like this), they often mention a certain list of advantages: added height, ease of operation and emissions-free travel. The press release put out by Target, which announces the company's acquisition of Segways to be used as patrol vehicles at 150 stores, mentions the same three features. You'd almost think Segway has a hand in this sort of PR.
