Hybrid Tax Credits
Tax credits are available to buyers of hybrid gasoline-electric, diesel, battery-electric, alternative fuel, and fuel cell vehicles. The tax credit amount is based on a formula determined by vehicle weight, technology, and fuel economy compared to base year models. These credits are available for vehicles placed in service starting January 1, 2006. For hybrid and diesel vehicles made by each manufacturer, the credit will be phased out over 15 months starting after that manufacturer has sold 60,000 eligible vehicles. For vehicles made by manufacturers that have not reached the end of the phase-out, the credits will end for vehicles placed in service after December 31, 2010.

While a hybrid car in general does saves you some money on gas,
you may want to bear these points in mind when looking to buy a hybrid car.
1. Hybrid cars generally are more expensive than conventional gas powered cars. The price difference can be as much as $10,000. Hybrid cars are still new to consumers and may take a while before prices drop.
2. The batteries used in a hybrid car is different from a conventional car. The prices are much higher. They are about $2000 more expensive. However, hybrid car batteries have a longer life span as well.
3. The government has a tax deduction for hybrid cars owners. The hybrid car tax deduction varies from year to year but in general, you can save at least a couple of thousand dollars.
4. The cost of maintenance for a hybrid car is also higher. Also it has more complex systems and engine, a normal mechanic may not know how to repair it. In most cases, you need to send back to the hybrid car manufacturer for maintenance and repair and the cost is not cheap.
5. Hybrid cars use special tires that are wore out more easily than conventional cars. These hybrid car tires cost more and need to be replaced around 25,000 miles.
While the above points may seem that buying a hybrid car is more expensive, the fuel savings in itself is definitely worth it in the long run. |

2008 Chicago Auto Show Introductions - Hybrid Trucks
GMC's Denali XT Hybrid might be the vehicle El Camino fans have been waiting for. It's sporty, has a payload of 1,100 pounds and can tow about 3,500.
The XT pairs GM's hybrid system with a new 4.9L version of its small-block V-8 engine. The smaller-displacement engine is E85-capable and an active fuel management system allows it to run on varying cylinders as needed to conserve fuel.

NYC Green Car Launches Luxury Car Service Using...
NYC Green Car, a luxury car service committed to only using hybrid vehicles, announced today that is has launched service in New York City. Although some New York car services have hybrid vehicles in their fleet, NYC Green Car believes it is the first car service in the city committed to only using hybrid cars. The fleet consists of Toyota Camry and Lexus cars; the company does not use Toyota Prius vehicles, which it deems too small for corporate customers. NYC Green Car serves the entire tri-state area and can be used for travel anywhere, including outside the region.

Virginia Extends Hybrid Right To Use HOV Lanes

Published: March 12, 2008Earlier this week Gov. Timothy M. Kaine signed a law that keeps hybrids in HOV lanes for another year. The sunset date for the hybrid vehicle extension is now July 1, 2009. This exemption applies to all hybrid vehicles with clean special fuel license plates driving on Interstate 66 and those registered before July 1, 2006, on Interstates 395 and 95.
Kaine signed the bill, HB 1014, into law on Monday, said press secretary Gordon Hickey.
The number of hybrid vehicles allowed to drive on HOV lanes on I-95 and I-395 are capped.
The fines for breaking HOV laws have not changed. The penalties range from $125 for the first offense to $1,000 for the fourth offense. Most weekday HOV restrictions begin at 6:30 a.m. The I-66 HOV restrictions begin at 5:30 a.m. at Va. 234 outside the Beltway. Read More..
