Mar 23, 2008 - 2:24:20 PM

The Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE, a multi-million dollar competition designed to inspire a new generation of viable, safe and super fuel-efficient vehicles, has announced a partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy to inspire youth and the general public about the alternative vehicle and fuel options of the near future. The two organizations plan to create a national education program that will encourage young people to pursue careers in energy-efficient sciences and technology. The U.S. Department of Energy plans to make up to a $3.5 million USD grant to fund this program, subject to appropriation from Congress. Read More
Fuel Efficiency Saves You Money
You can save $200 to $1,500 each year by choosing the most efficient vehicle that meets your needs. This can add up to thousands of dollars over a vehicle’s lifetime. Fuel-efficient models come in all shapes and sizes, so you don't have to sacrifice utility or size. You can also increase the fuel economy of you current vehicle by adopting good driving habits and maintaining your vehicle.

Drive Sensibly
Aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration and braking) wastes gas. It can lower your gas mileage by 33 percent at highway speeds and by 5 percent around town. Sensible driving is also safer for you and others, so you may save more than gas money.
Observe the Speed Limit
While each vehicle reaches its optimal fuel economy at a different speed (or range of speeds), gas mileage usually decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 mph. As a rule of thumb, you can assume that each 5 mph you drive over 60 mph is like paying an additional $0.20 per gallon for gas.

Remove Excess Weight
Avoid keeping unnecessary items in your vehicle, especially heavy ones. An extra 100 pounds in your vehicle could reduce your MPG by up to 2%. The reduction is based on the percentage of extra weight relative to the vehicle's weight and affects smaller vehicles more than larger ones.
Avoid Excessive Idling
Idling gets 0 miles per gallon. Cars with larger engines typically waste more gas at idle than do cars with smaller engines.

Use Cruise Control
Using cruise control on the highway helps you maintain a constant speed and, in most cases, will save gas.

Use Overdrive Gears
When you use overdrive gearing, your car's engine speed goes down. This saves gas and reduces engine wear.

EPA has improved its methods for estimating fuel economy, but your mileage will still vary.

EPA tests are designed reflect "typical" driving conditions and driver behavior, but several factors will affect your mpg significantly:

  • How & Where You Drive
  • Vehicle Condition & Maintenance
  • Fuel Variations
  • Vehicle Variations
  • Engine Break-In

Tax credits are available to buyers of hybrid gasoline-electric, diesel, battery-electric, alternative fuel, and fuel cell vehicles. The tax credit amount is based on a formula determined by vehicle weight, technology, and fuel economy compared to base year models. These credits are available for vehicles placed in service starting January 1, 2006.

For hybrid and diesel vehicles made by each manufacturer, the credit will be phased out over 15 months starting after that manufacturer has sold 60,000 eligible vehicles. For vehicles made by manufacturers that have not reached the end of the phase-out, the credits will end for vehicles placed in service after December 31, 2010.

GREET 2.8a - August 30, 2007 (download)

How Does GREET Work?

To fully evaluate energy and emission impacts of advanced vehicle technologies and new transportation fuels, the fuel cycle from wells to wheels and the vehicle cycle through material recovery and vehicle disposal need to be considered. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), Argonne has developed a full life-cycle model called GREET (Greenhouse gases, Regulated Emissions, and Energy use in Transportation). It allows researchers and analysts to evaluate various vehicle and fuel combinations on a full fuel-cycle/vehicle-cycle basis.

GREET was developed as a multidimensional spreadsheet model in Microsoft Excel. This public domain model is available free of charge for anyone to use. The first version of GREET was released in 1996. Since then, Argonne has continued to update and expand the model. The most recent GREET versions are GREET 1.8b version for fuel-cycle analysis and GREET 2.8a version for vehicle-cycle analysis.

For a given vehicle and fuel system, GREET separately calculates the following:

  • Consumption of total energy (energy in non-renewable and renewable sources), fossil fuels (petroleum, natural gas, and coal together), petroleum, coal and natural gas.
  • Emissions of CO2-equivalent greenhouse gases - primarily carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O).
  • Emissions of six criteria pollutants: volatile organic compounds (VOCs), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxide (NOx), particulate matter with size smaller than 10 micron (PM10), particulate matter with size smaller than 2.5 micron (PM2.5),and sulfur oxides (SOx).

GREET includes more than 100 fuel production pathways and more than 70 vehicle/fuel systems. These vehicle/fuel systems cover all major vehicle technologies in the market and R&D arena:

  • Conventional spark-ignition engines
  • Direct-injection, spark-ignition engines
  • Direct injection, compression-ignition engines
  • Grid-independent hybrid electric vehicles
  • Grid-connected (or plug-in) hybrid electric vehicles
  • Battery-powered electric vehicles
  • Fuel-cell vehicles

To address technology improvements over time, GREET simulates vehicle/fuel systems over the period from 1990 to 2020, in five-year intervals.

Uses of GREETArgonne has used GREET to evaluate various engine and fuel systems for DOE, other government agencies, and industry (see publications list). In addition, other organizations have used GREET for their evaluation of advanced vehicle technologies and new transportation fuels. GREET users include government agencies, the auto industry, the energy industry, research institutions, universities, and public interest groups. GREET users are spread in North America, Europe, and Asia.

SAAB To Unveil BioPower 100 at Geneva Car Show
Saab has been showing various ethanol powered BioPower concepts and building production versions for the past couple of years. The latest version, the BioPower 100, will be shown at the Geneva Motor Show next month. The new concept will be derived from the 9-5 SportCombi wagon, and will be optimized for E100 pure ethanol. This concept is intended to show the performance potential of running on ethanol which has relatively high octane ratings. Read More..

Redesigned petrol engine promises green gains
A simple redesign of the petrol engine could greatly increase its efficiency when idling or driving at low speeds, as well as reduce the harmful emissions it produces. UK researchers say the new design could even make petrol engines as efficient as diesel ones. In most petrol engines, fuel is ignited by spark plugs inside cylinders which house the engine's pistons. When the fuel burns, it produces rapidly Read More..

New CAFE Rules Will Bring Big Changes
But 35 MPG Doesn't Mean What It Says
By John O'Dell - Edmunds.com

The idea that we'll all be driving 35-mpg cars and trucks in a dozen years is all the rage these days after Congress passed and President Bush signed into law a new measure boosting required average fuel economy by almost 40 percent.

But there's still a long way to go, and the new law ratcheting the so-called corporate average fuel economy, or CAFE, standard to 35 mpg doesn't mean the window stickers on new cars sold in the 2020 model year and beyond are really going to show that kind of fuel efficiency.
