Detroit Electric Car to Return After 100 Years
In a joint announcement, US electric car pioneer ZAP and China Youngman Automotive Group announced today they are reviving the 100- year-old electric car brand Detroit Electric for their automotive joint venture. Detroit Electric officials look forward to bringing new vehicle technologies to market by 2009, and beyond that the possibility of bringing new manufacturing and green collar jobs to California. Detroit Electric plans to introduce its first electric cars and buses in 2009. The ZAP Alias, which is under development for the joint venture, will be one of several vehicles being planned to carry the Detroit Electric brand. ZAP is planning a presentation on Detroit Electric for North American auto dealers at NADA 2008, the world's largest auto show for dealers. |

While a lot of attention has been given to new and exotic technologies like hydrogen powered cars and hybrid electric vehicles, a simpler and more time-tested solution exists in the form of biodiesel and vegetable oil fuels. Instead of expensive new technologies, the trusty diesel engine running domestically grown bio-fuels and/or used cooking oil is suddenly being rediscovered as a viable alternative.

How To Convert Your Car To Propane
You'll need five major pieces of equipment to convert your car to LP. All are available from most any LP dealer (with a little help from a hardware store on fittings), although you might want to try getting a used tank from one of the large forklift users or any of the businesses listed under "Gas, Liquified Petroleum, Bulk". If necessary, write to National LP Gas Association, 79 West Monroe St., Chicago, III. 60603 for help in locating equipment dealers near you. OK. Here's what you'll need:
1. A FUEL TANK. Use only a regulation motor vehicle LP tank made to ASME, ICC or DOT specifications. Such a container has all the safety features required by law and common sense, comes with a gauge, has terrific rupture resistance and is built to last forever.
2. A CONVERTOR, or "demand regulator" that changes the liquid propane to a gas (using engine heat to prevent freezing) and supplies just as much of the fuel as the power plant demands through its carburetor vacuum. There are a number of good, time-tested convertors on the market (Century, Beam, Impco, etc.). I've been satisfied with the Century in my bus but I've just done a conversion with an Impco that seems even better.
3. A SPUD-IN JET for your engine's carburetor (two if there are two carburetors). |
4. TWO HOSES. One (A) to take liquid propane from the fuel tank to the convertor and another (B) to carry vaporized fuel from the convertor to the carburetor. Hose A must be super-duper aircraft quality and you'll probably have to order it to length and diameter specifications (in which case it'll come with fittings on either end). Hose B can be the ordinary rubber variety since it'll contain very little pressure. About 8' of A and 2' of B should do it.
5. FITTINGS AND HARDWARE. This will sound complex but don't panic. To conduct engine heat into and out of your convertor you'll need a foot or so of heater hose and two Y fittings for a water-cooled engine . . . or some 3/8" O.D. Prince Charles To Drive BioDiesel Jag
Prince Charles is now awaiting the delivery of the first of his fleet of chauffeur-driven (he is still a royal after all) Jags outfitted to run on B100 biodiesel. Ultimately all the vehicles he uses will run on B100, made from rapeseed oil (known in the US as canola). Starting with next year's annual accounts he will be publishing details of his household's carbon emissions and setting reduction targets. In addition to the biodiesel cars he's also taking public trains to get from his country home of Highgrove to London and switching over to sustainable sources of electricity for his residences.

The latest celebrity to join Will Ferrell, Jay Leno, Jeremy Piven and others in test-leasing a BMW Hydrogen 7 vehicle is actor Edward Norton. While famous folk like Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, and Cameron Diaz might have these vehicles drop them off at special events, the above select group actually get to use the cars for their everyday activities. It’s all part of BMW’s “Pioneer Program” to put the vehicle in the hands of high-profile individuals and record feedback for future improvements. From the release,
“While the BMW Hydrogen 7 is not for sale, it is considered to be a milestone in bringing forward hydrogen as the sustainable fuel for individual transportation. Running in hydrogen mode, the BMW Hydrogen 7 essentially emits nothing but water vapor, representing a major step in reducing harmful CO2 emissions. It is not a concept car, but a production model vehicle that has successfully completed the entire Product Development Process.”
Norton is a fitting choice to evaluate this clean technology, since he’s also one of the founders of the Solar Neighbors Program; which aims to get photovoltaic panels onto low-income homes in Los Angeles. Ethanol is a liquid fuel made from vegetable type sources instead of from oil.
Sources for ethanol include corn, wheat, barley, trees and grasses, etc.
Ethanol is less polluting than gasoline. Because ethanol is created from renewable resources, wider use of ethanol would greatly reduce our dependency on foreign oil.
Ethanol is most commonly mixed with regular gasoline and many vehicles are made to run on a fuel mixture known as E85 which is 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline.
Major auto manufacturers such as Ford, Chrysler, Nissan, Mercedes-Benz and GM make several vehicles which use ethanol. They are sometimes know as Flexible Fuel or "flex fuel" vehicles (FFV).As ethanol is not yet widely available these cars and trucks are purchased mostly by large companies who have their own fueling stations.Ethanol could easily be made available to consumers at currently existing gas stations. |
