HOME ENERGY EFFICIENCY - Heating |
Typically, 45% of your utility bill goes for heating and cooling. What's more, heating and cooling systems in the United States together emit 150 million tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year, adding to global climate change. They also generate about 12% of the nation's sulfur dioxide and 4% of the nitrogen oxides, the chief ingredients in acid rain.

Elements Of An Energy Efficient House Designing and building an energy-efficient home that conforms to the many considerations faced by homebuilders can be a challenge. However, any house style can be made to require relatively minimal amounts of energy to heat and cool, and be comfortable and healthy. It's easier now to get your architect and builder to use improved designs and construction methods. Even though there are many different design options available, they all have several things in common: a high R-value, tightly sealed thermal envelope; controlled ventilation; and lower than usual heating and cooling bills.

Selecting Your Heating System There are numerous factors to consider when choosing a heating system that’s best for you, such as safety, health, efficiency, cost, reliability and versatility.
In our overview of the selection process, we’re going to consider the most common forms of space heating options available today, including electricity, gas, fuel oil, and wood. We’ll also cover the heaters themselves – radiators, baseboard, fan, and gas heaters, along with central heating systems.

Optimize Your Fireplace As you sit by the fireplace enjoying the glow on these cold winter nights, are you content knowing you’re using a renewable fuel to warm your home? Depending on the type of fireplace you have, it may actually waste more energy than it creates throughout the season.
The problem is that most heat goes up the chimney, drawing cold air into the house to replace the heated air. When a fire isn’t burning, warm air can still escape through the chimney. But there are several things you can do to increase the efficiency of your fireplace.

Fireplace Reflectors Increases Heat Output Don't let fireplace masonry absorb your fire's heat! Heavy-gauge stainless steel reflector sits behind the fire to direct heat into the room, increasing output by 20% to 40%. It also enhances the look of your fireplace by mirroring the flames for a brighter burn. Freestanding designs work in gas and wood-burning fireplaces and install in seconds. Adjustable legs let you choose the height.

Corn Stoves are Similar Option For Home Heating Today, the idea of burning corn and other agri-fuels is really taking off. With energy prices and issues making national news lately, it's no wonder that lower-cost forms of home heating are being covered in the media. The many television, newspaper and radio reports talking about the benefits of burning corn, among other fuels, has translated into an acceptance by the public. Corn-burning technology is not a recent innovation, but one that developed about 20 years ago.
It's just that it did not 'grab our ear' until the last seven years or so. Within the past few years, state-of-the-art electronics and combustion processes are allowing the everyday consumer to economically heat their home without the back-breaking task associated with solid fuel burning.
Corn is easily stored and very easy to get into the appliances. Corn is readily available anywhere - you just need to find the local distribution centers and arrange to get a steady supply. Getting corn at the local feed store is a more expensive option, because they are selling it more as a value-added fuel for feeding chickens or deer. Users need to get closer to the source to get corn at the market price. |

Add room heat with a candle heater! The Steel and Ceramic Quad-Core™ Radiator captures, concentrates, modulates, distributes, and radiates the thermal energy of the candle into your room. It is the "heart" of the Kandle Heeter™ Candle Holder. It is comprised of a steel inner core and three ceramic modulators surrounding it. The solid steel core separates and unites the ceramic modulators into one integral unit.
The thermal mass of the inner core is increased by a series of flat washers, thrust washers, and hex nuts. The arrangement and varying sizes of the washers aids in the effective and efficient distribution of radiant and convection heat into the surrounding ceramics and then into your room. ReadMore.. |

What Size Furnace Do I Need? The size of a furnace is critical to efficiency. A system that's too large wastes energy warming up and cooling down as it continuously cycles off and on a furnace that is too small will fail to warm the house on really cold days. A properly-sized system is designed as closely as possible to the needs of the house; on the coldest days of the year, it should run almost continuously. Read More.. |
Use Your Ceiling Fan To Lower Your Heating Cost? One of the most effective energy-savings solutions are right under your nose or, in one case, right above your head. Follow these no-cost energy saving tips for the winter: Flip the Switch ... on Your Ceiling FanThat is A ceiling fan is naturally energy efficient -- it circulates air while using very little electricity. Most people don't realize a ceiling fan can help warm you up in the winter as easily as it can cool you down in the summer. In fact, less than 25 percent of people are taking advantage of the easy energy savings a ceiling fan affords. Read More..

Integrated digitally controlled air and water heating systems use computer controls to dramatically reduce energy use. The system's fuel neutral design allows for either oil heat or natural gas to be used as an energy source for both residential and light commercial applications. Systems such as SYSTEM 2000 from Energy Kinetics provides multi-zone control of warm air, radiant heat, hydronic baseboard and domestic hot water as well as heating capabilities for pools or spas.
This is the "smart" central control of the system. It continuously monitors heat requirements and directs output where it is needed. Homes regularly save 40% or more.

Solar Sun Rings For Heating Your Pool The Solar Sun Ring is a passive solar swimming pool heating device made from two sheets of heavyweight U.V. resistant vinyl. The outer air chamber and central air chamber keep the Solar Sun Ring afloat and the two vinyl layers apart creating an insulating air pocket. The upper clear layer focuses the sunlight on the lower layer. The blue layer contains copper to help it absorbs about 50% of the sunlight and convert it to heat. The balance of the sunlight is allowed to pass through for deep water heating. Each unit will produce 21,000 BTU per day. At night the air trapped between the two sheets of vinyl acts as an insulating blanket to retain heat gained during the day. The outer edge of Solar Sun Rings is equipped with six magnets that cause the individual rings to ”raft” together. The magnets hold the rings in contact with each other and allows a person to easily ”drag” the Solar Sun Rings across the pool for easy removal. |
Pellet Stoves For Home Heating Some homeowners are turning to pellet stoves to provide supplemental (or in some cases, primary) heat. Pellet stoves look similar to wood stoves or fireplace inserts, but the similarities end there. Inside, they are very sophisticated combustion appliances. Most pellet stoves produce a small fire that, concentrated in the center of the unit, burns hot. If you like the look of a fire, it's important to find a unit with a good flame pattern and large viewing glass. For some stoves, you can get ceramic logs that help disperse the flames and give the fire a more traditional look.

Don't Pay To Heat Your Hot Water 24 hrs A Day With a standard water heater, you heat and reheat the same water even when you're sleeping. The tank-less water heater is a more efficient way to heat water. It heats water quickly and delivers an endless supply of hot water for as long as you need it. With a tank less water heater, you only pay to heat water when you need it and for as long as you want it.
- Produce and supply endless streams of hot water to multiple outlets simultaneously without any fluctuation in temperature
- Are up to 50 percent more energy efficient than a traditional natural gas water heater and up to 70 percent more efficient than an electric water heater
- Shut-off automatically when the water supply is closed, providing users with significant energy savings - in turn saving money on their utility bills
- Are compact wall mounted units with a life expectancy of 25 years, whereas hot water tanks require about 16 square feet of floor space and usually last around 10 years
