A Different Era For The Energy Business Sales of solar power equipment are hot. Wind energy projects are sprouting up across the landscape. Methane that builds up in the garbage in landfills is being sold in growing quantities to generate power.
Alternative energy - solar, wind, geothermal and a grab bag of other sources - is doing better than ever. But the main reason is not the increase in oil and natural gas prices.
When the cost of fossil fuels rose and fell in past years, the fate of many alternative energy projects rose and fell with them. But that is no longer true. Indeed, even if prices eventually recede from their current level of about $40 a barrel to something in the $30 to $35 range, as many expect, analysts predict that most renewable energy projects will not suffer as badly as they once did. NEW YORK (Associated Press) - Hydroelectric power has been around for decades, but an emerging technology is taking hold to capture energy from the ocean's crashing waves.
Several start-ups have begun deploying buoys that harness energy from wave movement in coastal areas of the U.S., Canada, Europe, South America and Africa. The energy is then sent back ashore via underwater cables.
Ocean power is just one type of renewable energy whose outlook has brightened amid surging energy prices and growing concern about global warming. Within that environment, companies like Finavera Renewables Inc., Ocean Power Technologies Inc., Ocean Renewable Power Company LLC and Pelamis Wave Power have emerged to develop wave-energy projects across the globe. Sempra eyes cross-border power line
By Bruce V. Bigelow
UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER
February 28, 2008
Sempra Energy has applied for a federal permit to build a high-voltage transmission line across the international border that will connect a proposed wind-energy plant in Baja California to San Diego's power grid.
The estimated cost of the project is not yet available, Sempra spokesman Art Larson said last night.
The cross-border line would tie into the Southwest Power Link, a major 500-kilovolt transmission line operated by San Diego Gas & Electric Co. that runs parallel to Interstate 8.
The proposed line would carry as much as 1,250 megawatts of electric power Read More..

Search giant Google on Tuesday pledged to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to make renewable energy cheaper than coal. The effort, dubbed REGoogle itself to next year invest tens of millions in research and development in renewable energy. Technologies created by Google will likely be used by Google, whose data centers are voracious consumers of electricity. The company envisions either selling electricity from renewable sources or licensing technology on terms that would promote broad adoption, according to company founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Japan Mines `Flammable Ice,' Flirts With Environmental Disaster By Shigeru Sato
Dec. 26 (Bloomberg) -- Fifty-five million years ago the world's climate was catastrophically changed when volcanoes melted natural gas frozen in the seabed. Now Japan plans to drill for the same icy crystals to end its reliance on imported energy. Billions of tons of methane hydrate, frozen chunks of chemical-laced water buried in sediment some 3,000 feet under the Pacific Ocean floor, Read More.. |

Konarka Demonstrates First-Ever Inkjet-Printed Solar Cells.
Inkjet printing is considered promising because the company’s polymer solar photovoltaic devices can be fabricated very easily because of the compatibility with various substrates and it does not require additional patterning. Konarka calls products it Power PlasticR, a material that converts light to energy
The company discusses and analyzes the performance of highly efficient inkjet printed organic bulk heterojunction solar cells in a paper recently published in Advanced Materials, entitled,"High Photovoltaic Performance of Inkjet Printed Polymer:Fullerene Blends" by Dr. Stelios A. Choulis, Claudia N. Hoth, Dr. Pavel Schilinsky and Dr. Christoph J. Brabec, all of Konarka.
"Demonstrating the use of inkjet printing technology as a fabrication tool for highly efficient solar cells and sensors with small area requirements is a major milestone," commented Rick Hess, president and CEO at Konarka. "This essential breakthrough in the field of printed solar cells positions Konarka as an emerging leader in printed photovoltaics."
Inkjet printing is a commonly used technique for controlled deposition of solutions of functional materials in specific locations on a substrate and can provide easy and fast deposition of polymer films over a large area. The demonstration confirms that organic solar cells can be processed with printing technologies with little or no loss compared to "clean room" semiconductor technologies such as spin coating. The most popular printing tool for organic electronics, inkjet printing could become a smart tool to manufacture solar cells with multiple colors and patterns for lower power requirement products, like indoor or sensor applications.
Konarka Technologies, of Lowell, Massachusetts, is a developer of polymer photovoltaic technology that provide a source of renewable power in a variety of form factors for commercial, industrial, government and consumer applications. (3/3/08)
