COMMERCIAL BUILDING ENERGY SAVINGS - Lighting

Lighting Retrofits Represent Triple Benefit for Commercial Building Energy Savings

Since lighting can represent 40% or more of a commercial building's fixed energy costs, it pays to make it the first target in an energy efficiency program.  The first levels of benefits from energy savings comes from replacement of old technology with new technology. Typical old style T-12 flourecent lamps and electromagnetic ballasts are grossly inefficient compared with new ballasts and more compact T-8 lamps. New energy savings fixtures don't sacrifice quality while and in some cases increase light levels and workspace productivity. When combined with bi-level switching and room sensors that automatically turn lights off when a room or office space is not in use can create dramatic energy savings.

Changing Commercial Lighting Can Do A Big Part For The Planet

Nationwide, if all commercial buildings installed state-of-the-art energy-saving lighting systems, their lighting energy use could be reduced by at least 40%. Doing so would lower U.S. carbon dioxide emissions by about 175 billion pounds per year.

This action alone could halt the growth in carbon dioxide emissions in the U.S., given recent growth rates. By using high-efficiency lighting equipment, a business can help the environment and its own bottom line.

If many businesses do this, they will be taking an important step toward protecting the planet from global warming.

New Lamps, New Ballasts Save Energy
Lighting technology has evolved rapidly in recent years. In office buildings, the typical fluorescent lighting fixture with four 4-foot fluorescent tubes (referred to as “lamps” in the lighting trade) and two magnetic ballasts uses 160 to 180 watts of power. However, new fixtures with special thin-diameter lamps and electronic ballasts use about 115 watts. In spaces that are overlit — and many are — further energy savings are possible by switching from 4-lamp fixtures to 3- or even 2-lamp fixtures. Special reflectors can be installed to optimize light distribution for the reduced number of lamps in each fixture. The energy use of a 2-lamp fixture can be as low as 58 watts, a savings of up to 70%.
In stores, most displays are lit by incandescent spotlights, typically using 150 watts apiece. Special “halogen IR” lamps reduce energy waste and burn more brightly, permitting a 60 watt halogen lamp to be substituted for a standard 150 watt spotlight — a savings of 60%. The halogen lamp costs more — about $8.50 versus $2.50 — but typically lasts 50% longer and saves $20 in energy costs over its lifetime.

Reduce Energy Consumption by Upgrading your existing HID System to a T5

Upgrading with SYLVANIA T5 Fluorescent lighting can reduce your lighting load by up to 50%. When you know that as much as half of the total electricity you use can be attributed to lighting, can you afford not to find out more about T5 Fluorescent lighting?

SYLVANIA Lighting Services provides turnkey solutions. The efficiency and cost savings of these solutions will amaze you.

Save 25% - 50% off your lighting load by upgrading your existing system to T5. Typical payback on these lighting upgrades are only one and half to two years. Read More..

Letting the sun shine in on energy use
The window office — that most coveted of office spaces in the modern commercial building — is also a naturally energy-efficient office, because the occupant needs less electric lighting when sunshine streams in. Most of us prefer natural light to artificially created light anyway, one reason these offices are so desirable.

In California, 40 percent of the electricity used by commercial buildings is consumed by electric lighting, the largest single load in these buildings. Throughout the rest of the country, in spite of variations in climate that make heating a larger overall piece of the pie, lighting always uses a substantial percentage of building electricity.

If architects and engineers designed buildings to use daylighting as an integral part of their lighting system, lighting energy use could decrease substantially. But while there has been much progress in the last 20 years in improving the efficiency of electric lights, bringing daylighting into the fold as an energy efficiency strategy has been more difficult.

"It requires careful integration of lighting and window systems, architectural design that recognizes the importance of daylighting, and a control strategy for turning down electric lights automatically as natural light levels increase," says Stephen Selkowitz, head of EETD's Building Technologies Department.  Read More..
