ALTERNATIVE POWER - SOLAR Energy

solar panels photovoltaics
No better time for Solar
With the generous rebates now available to your business, there's never been a better time for your company to make the switch to clean, affordable — and powerful — solar energy. Businesses and commercial buildings can take full advantage of the economic solar incentives from the state and federal government.
Solar Dish Can Power 40 Homes
Applying the most efficient solar technology available, researchers are building a new power plant that utilizes the heat from sunlight to generate electric power. The solar dish, as it's known, is a joint project between Stirling Energy Systems, Inc. (SES) and the National Nuclear Security Administration's Sandia National Laboratories.Based in New Mexico, the prototype contains 82 mirrors that focus the Sun's rays, transmitting the heat energy to an engine filled with hydrogen. As the gas expands and contracts from heating and cooling, this motion drives pistons which power a generator that creates electricity. Read More..

Concentrating Solar Power Project
HOUSTON (Reuters) - The Electric Power Research Institute said on Wednesday it will launch a project to study the feasibility of "concentrating" solar power to increase its efficiency at the request of a number of western U.S. electric utilities.Unlike conventional flat-plate solar or photovoltaic panels, concentrating solar power uses reflectors to generate electricity more efficiently and in larger amounts, EPRI said in a release. The institute said the project will study the feasibility of building a solar power plant in Read More..
Solar Energy: Past, Present & Future
The use of the sun as an energy source can be traced back to Ancient Greece. Near populated areas, the Greeks ravaged forests for wood to heat their homes and cook food. Wood supplies dwindled, and wood had to be imported. With wood scarce and sources of supply far away, the Greeks turned to an energy source that was plentiful and free -- the sun. The Greeks learned to build their houses to take advantage of the sun's rays. Solar architecture -- designing buildings to make optimal use Read More..

Electrical storage
Rechargeable Batteries
can be used to store excess electricity from a photovoltaic system. This type of storage system consists of a photovoltaic power source connected to a battery bank via a charge controller and inverter. Lead Acid Batteries are the most common type of battery associated with photovoltaic systems because of their relatively low upfront costs and high availability. Lead acid batteries have an energy density of 110-140 kJ/kg, a charge/discharge efficiency of  72-90% and cost $150-200 per kWh ($45 to $55 per MJ). Lead batteries used in off-grid applications should be sized for three to five days of capacity and should limit depth of discharge to 50 percent to minimize cycling and prolong battery life. Newer batteries can be deep discharged for over 25,000 cycles.

Excess electricity from photovoltaic systems also can be sent to the transmission grid where it can be used to meet existing demand or temporarily stored for later use. Grid tied electrical system utility policies often give photovoltaic system owners a credit for the electricity they deliver to the grid. This credit is used to offset electricity provided from the grid when the photovoltaic system cannot meet demand. Where there is net metering, the credit is equivalent to or greater than the cost of electricity to the consumer.

New Low Cost Solar Panels Ready for Mass Production
Colorado's State Univ.'s panels will cost less than $1 per watt.

Compiled By Adrienne Selko
Sept. 10, 2007 -- Colorado State University's method for manufacturing low-cost, high-efficiency solar panels is nearing mass production. AVA Solar Inc. will start production by the end of next year on the technology developed by mechanical engineering Professor W.S. Sampath at Colorado State. The new 200-megawatt factory is expected to employ up to 500 people. Based on the average household usage, 200 megawatts will power 40,000 U.S. homes.  Read More..

LOS ANGELES - Two start-up companies and New Mexico plan a US$1.6 billion solar power farm that would be 30 times the size of the world's biggest one now, with enough power for 240,000 homes.

They also plan a factory to make photovoltaic panels for the farm, near the Mexican border in New Mexico, developers said on Wednesday. Read More..

Assessment of Parabolic Trough and Power Tower Solar Technology Cost and Performance Forecasts

This report is the result of an independent analysis of parabolic trough and power tower solar technology cost and performance.

New Solar Film/Panel Technology Developed in South Africa
The new technology should be available in South Africa within a year and through a special converter, energy can be fed directly into the wiring of existing houses. New powerful storage units will allow energy storage to meet demands even in winter. The panels are so efficient they can operate through a Cape Town winter. while direct sunlight is ideal for high-energy generation, other daytime light also generates energy via the panels.  A team of scientists led by University of Johannesburg (formerly Rand Afrikaans University) scientist Professor Vivian Alberts achieved the breakthrough after 10 years of research.

Solar Chimney & Cooling Towers:SUBSIDENCE TOWERS

The Visitor Centre at Monarto Zoological Park uses three subsidence towers for cooling the public and administrative spaces. The subsidence towers are 3.6m x 3.6m with an overall height above floor level of 9.4m.

The subsidence towers at Monarto are believed to be the first installed in Australia and will demonstrate an alternative low

energy, low water consumption model for cooling in hot arid climates.
Subsidence towers introduce moisture at tower top by air filtration through controlled rate wetted perimeter pads, the increased air mass within the tower propelling the air volume into the building.Tower operation utilises these naturally occurring air movement forces and thereby minimises both water and energy demand.

Energy demand is limited to water pumping from storage to the tower head. Water use is regulated to maintain wetting of pads released by evaporation with minimum excess water discharge. As the tower is large in duct volume, significant air changes are generated with low perceptible air movement speeds which avoids the chill cooling more common with duct and fan forced systems.

The solar-electric Helios Prototype flying wing is shown over the Pacific Ocean during its first test flight on solar power from the U.S. Navy's Pacific Missile Range Facility on Kauai, Hawaii, July 14, 2001. The 18-hour flight was a functional checkout of the aircraft's systems and performance in preparation for an attempt to reach sustained flight at 100,000 feet altitude later this summer.

Konarka Demonstrates First-Ever Inkjet-Printed Solar Cells.
Inkjet printing is considered promising because the company’s polymer solar photovoltaic devices can be fabricated very easily because of the compatibility with various substrates and it does not require additional patterning. Konarka calls products it Power PlasticR, a material that converts light to energy. The company discusses and analyzes the performance of highly efficient inkjet printed organic bulk heterojunction solar cells in a paper recently published in Advanced Materials, entitled,"High Photovoltaic Performance of Inkjet Printed Polymer:Fullerene Blends" by Dr. Stelios A. Choulis, Claudia N. Hoth, Dr. Pavel Schilinsky and Dr. Christoph J. Brabec, all of Konarka."Demonstrating the use of inkjet printing technology as a fabrication tool for highly efficient solar cells and sensors with small area requirements is a major milestone," commented Rick Hess, president and CEO at Konarka. "This essential breakthrough in the field of printed solar cells positions Konarka as an emerging leader in printed photovoltaics."

Inkjet printing is a commonly used technique for controlled deposition of solutions of functional materials in specific locations on a substrate and can provide easy and fast deposition of polymer films over a large area. The demonstration confirms that organic solar cells can be processed with printing technologies with little or no loss compared to "clean room" semiconductor technologies such as spin coating. The most popular printing tool for organic electronics, inkjet printing could become a smart tool to manufacture solar cells with multiple colors and patterns for lower power requirement products, like indoor or sensor applications.Konarka Technologies, of Lowell, Massachusetts, is a developer of polymer photovoltaic technology that provide a source of renewable power in a variety of form factors for commercial, industrial, government and consumer applications.
